College Democrats Campaign Invasion: Wake County School Board Races
October 8th, 11-2pm – Raleigh, NC
Wake County is home to the largest public school system in the state, and its size ranks in the top 20 nationally. Prior to the troubling 2009 election, the county had long operated under progressive leadership that supported equality in education, including a successful diversity policy. In 2010, the new Republican-dominated school board voted to remove the diversity policy — an action that would likely lead to de facto segregation of the county’s schools. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan denounced the actions of the school board, and their irresponsible, partisan behavior (regrettably) made news nationwide.
On Saturday, October 8, the College Democrats of North Carolina will be canvassing for progressive school board candidates who support the values of the Democratic Party. We will get out the vote to elect citizen leaders who will fight for the educational rights of all of Wake County’s 143,000 public school students.
College Democrats Campaign Invasion: Mecklenburg County School Board Races
October 15th 11-2pm – Charlotte, NC
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system is another one of the largest public school systems in the state, with a long, and sometimes controversial, history regarding diversity and performance. With recent controversial school closings and budget cuts, it’s vital we have Democrats representing the students that need it most on our school board. We will be traveling to Charlotte on October 15th to canvass for some great candidates: Aaron Pomis, Ericka Ellis-Stewart, and Mary McCray. With over 15 candidates running for just a few At-Large seats on the school board, every phone call and door knock matters!
5th Annual YDNC/CDNC Fall Canvass: Asheville Municipal Elections
October 22nd – Asheville, NC
College Democrats Campaign Invasion: Chapel Hill Town Council
November 5th 11-2pm – Chapel Hill, NC
We are excited to close out our series of canvasses with one that has a personal connection to many of our College Dems, despite where they live or attend school. Lee Storrow, CDNC’s 2010-2011 Director of Political Affairs, graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in May and now is in pursuit of a seat on the Chapel Hill Town Council.
Lee has numerous credentials that make him well qualified to serve on Chapel Hill’s town council, including working as a advocate at multiple NC nonprofits and currently serving as the managing director at the North Carolina Alliance for Health. CDNC is so proud of all the great work Lee has done for Democratic Party, the Town of Chapel Hill, and the State of North Carolina. We hope College Democrats from throughout the state will join us for our final canvass on Saturday, November 5, as we knock on doors to, proudly, elect one of our own.
